Staying positive, despite your disability

Some people might have a hard time accepting the fact that they have a disability. I know because I used too also. But we eventually have to learn to appreciate who we are because there is no changing that. We can't change the fact that we have a disability but we can learn to love ourselves and improve ourselves, and how we face and look at life. One of the things we can be very confident about is the verse "God created us in his own image and likeness" and even though there are some things you might not like about yourself or how you were made "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful. I know that full well" Psalm 139:14. There were some things before in my life and childhood that I didn't like about myself. Like, how I learned slower than others at school, how I almost always dealt with anxiety, how I could barely eat, how I felt weak most days, had a hard time with social activities, couldn't take normal classes, etc. But through out all those struggles I didn't know going through all that was going to lead me to where I am today. It was God who was basically helping me through it all and giving me hope. Because I have learned that even though having my disability, 22q Deletion Syndrome, I know I am a strong woman of God despite the struggles that I have.

 

You who are reading this, what God has done for me, He for sure can also do for you. When I was younger and while I was still growing up I was weak and timid. I had a lot of growing up and maturing to do....especially in my faith. We don't have to sit around in self pity and not like the way we are, instead focus on your strengths.  Pray that God shows you how to lean on Him and use the abilities you do have. Perhaps you're a good listener? Maybe you can sing? Do you enjoy writing like me? Or maybe you are good at making people laugh or feel good about themselves.  We each have our own unique strengths.  What you might see as something small, God can use for it for good.  Even if you don't have a disability, you still may struggle with certain things. For example, you might have a temper, or trouble spelling, or even not have patience with others. You can still lean on God to help you through.

 

So instead of focusing on your weak spots, or being ashamed of your disability, try focusing on the things in life that are positive and can lead you to a positive future.
